Why regular nail trims matter
Most pet owners focus on food, exercise, and love — but sometimes the small stuff gets overlooked. One of those things? Nail length. When nails grow too long, they don’t just look awkward — they actually change the way a dog stands and walks. The toes may splay and the paw may flatten, pushing the joints in the legs, hips, and spine into unnatural positions.
That change in posture isn’t just temporary — over time it leads to strain, wear and tear, and even joint damage. What starts out as “just long nails” can slip into chronic discomfort, slowed movement, and arthritis.
The ripple effect
Long nails → altered gait and paw placement → bones and joints working incorrectly
Joints get extra stress, cartilage wears faster → pain, stiffness, reduced mobility
This affects a dog’s quality of life: less running, exploring, playing, or simply moving comfortably
Especially for older dogs, or dogs already prone to joint issues, keeping nails in check is a preventive step — not just aesthetic.
Good news: It’s manageable
The fix is a lot more straightforward than the damage. Regular, safe trimming is the key. Depending on breed, size, activity, and paw wear, your dog may need a nail trim every few weeks. The sooner you stay on top of it, the more you can prevent long-term joint strain.
Technique matters
It’s not just when you trim — it’s how. Cutting too close to the quick (the sensitive inner part of the nail with blood vessels) can cause pain, bleeding, and fear around trimming. A gradual, gentle approach helps the quick recede and prevents nails from getting too long in the first place. If your dog’s nails are already long and curled, it’s wise to have a professional help you reset them safely.
In short
Keeping your dog’s nails at a healthy length isn’t about looks. It’s about comfort, mobility, and long-term joint health. Regular, mindful trimming helps your dog walk comfortably, stand naturally, and enjoy a full, active life.
Consent-based nail trim training is all about trust, communication, and comfort. Instead of forcing a pet through the process, this approach teaches them to willingly participate, giving them a sense of control and reducing fear and stress. Pets learn that nail care isn’t something to be scared of, but something safe and positive.
Both Angel’s Pet Bathing and Get Dog Tired practice this cooperative care method. We take time to listen to each animal, move at their pace, and respect their boundaries, making the experience safer, calmer, and more enjoyable for everyone involved.
Our partner, Manda Peda of Get Dog Tired, is a professional trainer who specializes in consent-based handling and cooperative care. She is available for hire to assist owners who want to teach their pets how to participate calmly in nail care, grooming prep, and general handling.
Some pets may be turned away from our nail trim events if they need more one-on-one attention or training to feel safe and comfortable during the process. For those pets (as well as any pet owner who wants to build confidence and reduce stress around care routines), Manda offers private sessions designed to strengthen trust, improve communication, and make grooming experiences positive and cooperative.

We love teaming up with local non-profits to raise funds while helping pets stay healthy and comfortable. Here’s how your organization can work with us:
1. Reach Out to Discuss Your Event
Tell us about your organization, your fundraising goals, and the type of event you’d like to host. We’ll work with you to create a plan that’s simple, fun, and stress-free for pets.
2. Provide a Suitable Location
Our nail trim events require enough space for our grooming equipment, setup, and safe movement for pets and people. Indoor or sheltered areas are ideal, with space for tables, equipment, and a calm environment for animals.
3. Choose an Event Format
We can provide:
Appointment based events
Walk-in events
Educational opportunities (behavior, consent-based training, why nail care/grooming is important, career days, interactive demonstrations, and more!)
4. Coordinate Dates and Details
We’ll schedule a time that works for your organization and help promote the event so your community can participate.
5. Make a Positive Impact Together
Our team, including professional groomers from Angel’s Pet Bathing and trainer Manda Peda (Get Dog Tired), will ensure every pet is handled with care. All proceeds will go directly to your organization’s cause.
